64 Squares
- Designers Lotte Lawson
This editorial project explores the niche culture surrounding chess, as well as looking into the philosophical and cultural significance of the game.
It aims to illuminate, and provoke an appreciation for, the cultural impact chess has had on societies all over the entire world. Captivating players for over a millennium and a half, I wanted to demonstrate that there is a depth to the game that belies its simple rules. The book is built on an 8×8 grid, which references the structure of the chessboard itself. The title of the project—64 Squares—is also derived from this fundamental structure.
